> The process of club-fitting and custom club making
1. The shaft selection
Choosing the shaft best suited to each player is the first step. We use only shafts from the worlds leading manufacturer True Temper (and their subsiduary Grafalloy) who produce over 800 different shafts. Selecting the right one for each player is the work of the Club-fitter and is best done by watching shots hit on the practice range.
Most golfers are unfortunately using inappropriate shafts and are quite unaware of how much better a correct shaft could be.
Choosing the ideal shaft type and performance is the single biggest issue in the club-fitting process.
The shaft details to be determined include material (steel, graphite, titanium etc), flex, kick point, weight and length all of which are important and specific to each player.
2. The club heads
We have a huge range of club-heads to choose from:
Drivers
Most players now enjoy the benefits of titanium headed drivers. We offer sizes from 260cc up to the maximum of 460cc with lofts ranging from 8 degrees to 15 degrees in different models. The range includes a 400cc head with 9 or 10 degrees loft and a small offset to help avoid fade or induce draw.
Stainless steel drivers are less expensive and are available in the Premier and Longnose ranges and in lofts from 10.5 to 13 degrees. These include an offset 10 degree head in the “Longnose” range.
Fairway woods
Our most popular model by far is our low profile "longnose" range of fairway woods in numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11. The low centre of gravity of these heads can help players at all levels to get the ball away from any lie.
Our "Premier" range of user-friendly, conventional shape utility woods from #3 to #13
Offset woods in the "longnose", low-profile shape to help most players defeat the slice.
Irons
Progressive offset 999 model irons made in 316 stainless steel for ease of lie and loft angle adjustments. All cavity back and running down to the 62 degree lob wedge.
Zero offset 000 model irons for the quality strikers also in 316 stainless steel. Cavity back except for the range of wedges all in blade configuration.
Our classic polished 17-4 stainless steel "premier" model irons from 1-iron to 60 degree lob wedge. Cavity back with blade wedges
Hybrids
Our “Transition” heads are shaped similarly to the longnose woods but are fitted with iron shafts and are made at lengths close to the corresponding iron. We offer all numbers from #2 to #9.
In recent years most players have become aware that long irons become more difficult to play as we get older. That fact has resulted in much wider acceptance of the fairway woods number 7, 9 and 11. The hybrids offer the same advantages of the wood head shape while keeping the shaft shorter and more like the iron length.
Players who like to use a 2 or 3-iron will be amazed at the ease of the Transition 2 and 3.
Around the greens chipping with the 7, 8 and 9 in the Transition range is often much more successful than with an iron because of the broad flat base of the club and the reduced likelihood of duffing.
There are now special shafts manufactured for use in these hybrids and in many cases we are able to use our existing range of iron shafts to match new transition clubs into existing iron sets.
3. Grips
We offer a huge range of highest quality grips from Lamkin and Golf Pride in all sizes and in rubber and cords. The fitter will recommend a size having regard to hand size, comfort and effects on shot shape.
4. Assembly
Having selected the most suitable shafts (including details of length and flex), determined the range of heads required to make the best set composition and chosen the grips the club-maker and has now to assemble the clubs.
Here we have one very important advantage over clubs purchased off the shelf. We manufacture all our heads over a very wide weight range so that a club can be made at any length and by choosing an appropriate head weight we can achieve a “swingweight” that is suitable for the player.
This essential element of the process is largely ignored by other manufacturers and professionals who will happily extend or shorten clubs without regard for the impact on swing weight.
Lofts and Lies
Our use of 316 stainless steel in our top-of-the-range iron heads gives us the capacity to make precise adjustments to the heads.
Lies:
A players height and proportions together with the length of shaft selected will determine the lie angle adjustment required. It is very important that the irons be correctly set at the exact lie angle for the player if consistent accurate shot-making is ever to be possible. The exact lie angle requirements are best decided dynamically by the club-fitter interpreting the lie-board results.
Lofts:
The importance of modifications to lofts is often overlooked. These can be modified just as easily to give desired ball flight or exact shot lengths and distance intervals between clubs.
Club-Fitting Clinics
We conduct regular fitting clinics at various clubs around NSW and at our base
For a complete and detailed club-fit, contact your nearest Craftsman Fitting Centre to book a time at our next visit.
If you simply cannot reach one of our club-fitters you can contact us directly by phoning Phil on 0411 021 041 or by contacting us It may be possible to arrange for you to visit us at our base for the fitting session.
Failing even that we can still help you by use of our Fitting Form. This can never be as good as a complete fitting session on the practice ground but it is certainly a vast improvement over buying off the shelf.
Just complete the form and Email to us. We will recommend the types of shafts and clubheads with other details that we think appropriate and calculate the total costs.
